Hormone Replacement Therapy

What is hormone replacement therapy?

Hormone Replace Therapy (HRT) therapy eases the range of physical and emotional symptoms experienced by woman during menopause. Women often use HRT therapy to replace hormones lost through the natural process of ageing or pregnancy.

Menopause occurs when the ovaries stop producing an egg every four weeks as a result of decreasing oestrogen levels. When oestrogen levels drop, it disrupts the menstrual cycle and leads to recognisable menopause symptoms, including: hot flushes, night sweats, vaginal dryness/itching, loss of libido and incontinence.

Menopause is clinically diagnosed after 12 months of not having your period. The average age in the UK for menopause is 52 years, although some women may experience it in their 30s or 40s.

Hormone replacement therapy is routinely used to treat menopausal symptoms by replacing hormones lost during menopause. HRT treatment helps the body to restore levels of the female hormones oestrogen and progesterone. Progesterone is involved in menstruation and it works by helping to protect the lining of the womb.

Oestrogen only HRT increases the likelihood of developing womb cancer, and therefore for women who still have their womb intact, an HRT combination of progesterone and oestrogen is recommended.

HRT treatments available from Doctor Matt

Subject to a free online consultation Doctor Matt prescribes the following treatments; Premarin, Premique, Prempak-C, Livial, Kliovance, Evorel, Elleste-Solo, Elleste-Duet and Elleste Solo Mx patches. If you plan to take HRT, it is important to understand the risks versus the benefits and to put them into perspective.

Taking HRT has been associated with increased risks of breast cancer, stroke and blood clots in the leg and lungs. These risks are much reduced if HRT is only taken by low risk women and only for 3-5 years.

If you are under 45 and are taking HRT for a premature menopause then these risks are even lower. Use as directed by your doctor and carefully read the patient information leaflets supplied.
