What is Premarin?
Premarin is a Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) containing the female hormone oestrogen and is also referred to as a conjugated oestrogen. It is used to treat symptoms of the menopause and conditions associated with it, such as osteoporosis.
How does Premarin work?
During the menopause oestrogen levels in women decline, which can cause symptoms including: hot flushes (of the face, neck and chest), night sweats and vaginal atrophy (dryness, burning, itching and painful intercourse). Premarin works by replacing the oestrogen and therefore reducing the symptoms associated with the menopause.
How to use Premarin?
Premarin is available in 3 strengths: 300 mcg, 625 mcg and 1.25 mg tablets. Your doctor will aim to give you the lowest dose for the shortest time appropriate to treat your symptoms. The usual dose is one tablet daily and whilst on Premarin there are no tablet-free days, the next pack should be started the day after you finish the previous one. Premarin will not give you a monthly bleed.
Side-effects
Common side effects associated with Premarin are: gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, bloating), weight changes, breast enlargement/tenderness, mood changes, headaches, migraines and dizziness. The product literature advises caution with many health conditions, therefore please consult the patient information leaflet for detailed information regarding when HRT may be unsuitable for you. If you feel that your dose may be too high or low, please consult your doctor. Your HRT medication should be reviewed at least once a year to ensure you are receiving the appropriate therapeutic dose.
