About Hair Loss In Men

Hairloss in Men

Male pattern baldness is the most common type of hair loss and is caused by increased sensitivity to male sex hormones in certain parts of the scalp. The hair loss usually starts in men aged 20 to 30 and leads to a receding hairline and/or a thinning crown on top of the head.

The medical name for male pattern hair loss is Androgenetic alopecia. This common condition affects approximately 50% of men by the age of 50. This condition is determined by genetics, with signs of hair loss becoming evident from 20- 30 years of age. Affected individuals experience hair loss primarily at the front and sides of the scalp around the temple and crown.

The pathway through which androgenetic alopecia occurs is thought to be linked to the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Strands of hair emerge from tiny holes in the scalp known as follicles and in male-pattern hair loss, DHT can cause these follicles to shrink over time with each cycle of hair-growth. The resulting hair becomes progressively thinner and shorter, eventually leads to hair loss.
