Propecia (Finasteride) is the long term prescription treatment for male pattern baldness and has been available since 1997. In a five year study it has been shown that Propecia stopped further hair loss in over 90% of men. Two-thirds of men in the study experienced hair growth.

How long do I have to wait before I see results?

Results are noticeable in three to six months. By Month nine some men have reported that hair has started growing back. To get the most out of the treatment, you should continue the full course of treatment for at least a year as the balding process may return if you stop sooner. The active ingredient in Propecia, Finasteride works by stopping the breakdown of testosterone into compounds that cause hair loss and as a result stops hair loss – often reversing it.

Other things you need to know

There is no current evidence proving effectiveness for temple hair loss. You may benefit from Propecia treatment if you have temple hair loss only, but you must be aware that you there is no clinically proven evidence to help men with temple hair loss only. In less than 2% of men there has been a reported loss in libido, difficulties in achieving an erection and a decrease in the amount of semen. These side effects went away in men who stopped taking Propecia (Finasteride).
