Prempak-C
Prempak
How does Prempak-C work?
During the menopause oestrogen levels in women decline, which can cause symptoms including: hot flushes (of the face, neck and chest), night sweats and vaginal atrophy (dryness, burning, itching and painful intercourse). Prempak-C works by replacing the oestrogen and therefore reducing the symptoms associated with the menopause. Oestrogen can also be used to slow down the development of osteoporosis as it helps to prevent bone loss. For women with a uterus, a combination of oestrogen and progesterone is advised to eliminate the risk of developing endometrial cancer associated with taking oestrogen alone.
How to use Prempak-C?
Prempak-C is available in two strengths: 625mcg oestrogen (150mcg norgestrel) and 1.25mg oestrogen (150mcg norgestrel). Your doctor will aim to give you the lowest dose for the shortest time appropriate to treat your symptoms.
The usual dose of the oestrogen is one tablet daily and this is taken continuously. The norgestrel (light brown tablet) is taken on days 17-28 of each 28 day treatment cycle. You should start the treatment pack with the tablet marked ‘Day 1’ (if you still have periods, this is usually the first day of your period). With Prempak-C it is likely that that you will have a regular ‘withdrawal bleed’ each month. This is caused by the hormones and is perfectly normal. If however you are bleeding excessively or at any other time, please inform your doctor.
