Livial (Tibolone)
Livial
What is Livial?
Livial is a Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) containing the active ingredient, Tibolone. Livial, once broken down by the body, mimics the actions of both oestrogen and progesterone. It is used in postmenopausal women (with at least 12 months since their last natural period) to treat symptoms and associated conditions, such as osteoporosis.
How does Livial work?
Livial has both oestrogenic and progestogenic activity and therefore works in a similar way to combined HRT medication. During the menopause oestrogen levels in women decline, which can cause symptoms including: hot flushes (of the face, neck and chest), night sweats and vaginal atrophy (dryness, burning, itching and painful intercourse). Livial works by replacing the oestrogen and therefore reducing postmenopausal symptoms. After the menopause, women are more likely to develop fragile bones, however oestrogen can help by preventing bone loss and therefore slowing down the development of osteoporosis.
How to use Livial?
The usual dose of Livial is one tablet daily. The tablet should be swallowed whole and taken at the same time each day. Livial tablets are taken continuously and therefore do not take a break between strips or packs unless advised to do so by your doctor. Your doctor will aim to give you the lowest dose for the shortest time appropriate to treat your symptoms.
Side-effects
Common side effects associated with Livial are: weight gain, breast pain, stomach/pelvic pain, unusual hair growth and vaginal problems (secretions, itching, irritation, thrush). For a full list of side-effects and for any further information, please see the product information leaflet.
The product literature advises caution with many health conditions, therefore please consult the patient information leaflet for detailed information regarding when HRT may be unsuitable for you. If you feel that your dose may be too high or low, please consult your doctor. Livial contains lactose - if you have been told by your doctor that you have an intolerance to some sugars, contact your doctor before using Livial.
Effectiveness
HRT medicines effectively reduces the symptoms of menopause - hot flushes, vaginal dryness, night sweats and mood swings. They are also an option for osteoporosis prevention in postmenopausal women who are at high risk of fractures
