Gonorrhoea treatment
Gonorrhoea is a bacterial infection that is almost always transmitted sexually and can be passed easily through unprotected vaginal, oral or anal sex. Sharing sex toys that have not been washed can also spread the infection. Gonorrhoea is most common in young adults under 25 years of age.
Men and women may experience gonorrhoea very different with most men being symptomatic and 50% of women being asymptomatic. With both, common symptoms include discharge and pain/difficulty in urinating, however men tend to experience symptoms after 2-5 days whereas in women this can be up to 10 days after contracting the infection.
Gonorrhoea is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections in the Uk. Gonorrhoea can often be symptomless.
Untreated gonorrhoea, can cause long-term health conditions including infertility, pelvic inflammatory disease and swollen joints.
One third of patients infected with gonorrhoea will also have a chlamydia infection.
Doctor Matt therefore also prescribes a single course of azithromycin, which is highly effective in treating chlamydia infections to accompany Suprax Cefixime gonorrhoea medicine.
Suprax medicine
Suprax Cefixime 200mg, an oral antibiotic is a highly effective medicine used to treat Gonorrhoea. However as certain strains of gonorrhoea have become resistant to many antibiotics.
The recommended best treatment for gonorrhoea is therefore by combined injection of antibiotics at your local GUM (sexual health) clinic combined with an oral antibiotic. We also prescribe Azithromycin to combat any chlamydia which accompanies approximately 30% of all gonorrhoea cases
How to take it
Take both supplied tablets as a single dose.
