Singulair 10 mg Tablets x 28

Singulair

What is Singulair?

Montelukast, the active ingredient in Singulair, is a medicine that blocks the actions of leukotrienes. Leukotrienes are hormone-like chemicals which, as soon as they come into contact with certain allergens (i.e. substances that trigger an allergic reaction in people), cause the airways to narrow and become infected. Singulair blocks the actions of the leukotrienes and, as a result, prevents or reduces symptoms such as tightness of the chest, shortage of breath and coughing.

What is it used for?

Singulair is used to treat respiratory diseases caused by an allergic reaction. It is prescribed by doctors to provide relief from asthma and hay fever symptoms. Singulair can be used to reduce existing symptoms as well as prevent asthma attacks triggered by exercise or other forms of physical activity.

How to use Singulair

Singulair should be taken at bedtime and swallowed whole with some liquid. Singulair tablets have a special coating and must not be chewed. Because Singulair is a preventative medicine, it should be taken regularly, even when the symptoms are under control.

Dosage

Unless otherwise prescribed by the doctor, the usual dose for adults and children aged 15 and above is:

  • One 10 mg tablet once daily, before bedtime.

The duration of the treatment is decided by the doctor. If you have forgotten to take a dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Never take a double dose of Singulair to make up for the forgotten one.

Side effects

Singulair may have side effects, although not everyone gets them. The most commonly reported side effects include:

  • Sinus and/or throat infection (fungal or bacterial).

  • Gastrointestinal symptoms such as stomach ache, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea (usually only temporary).

  • Dizziness, drowsiness.

See package leaflet for more side effects, warnings and contraindications.

Pregnancy/driving ability/alcohol

Only use this medicine with the doctor''''s approval if you are pregnant. The use of Singulair is not recommended if you are breastfeeding, unless prescribed otherwise by the doctor.

Singulair may cause dizziness or drowsiness during the first days of treatment. Stay out of traffic if you experience these side effects.

Alcohol can make side effects such as dizziness worse. As long as you are feeling dizzy, you should stop or reduce your alcohol intake.
