Sildenafil

Sildenafil

What is Sildenafil?

The active ingredient in Viagra is Sildenafil, a substance that belongs to a group of medicines called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. Sildenafil improves blood flow to the penis and restores erectile function, making it easier to get and keep an erection when sexually aroused.

What is it used for?

Sildenafil is prescribed in the treatment of Erectile Dysfunction (ED), also referred to as impotence. Impotence is often related to poor blood flow in the penis. Because blood flow to the corpus cavernosum is restricted, it is difficult to get or sustain an erection. Sildenafil Hennig improves blood circulation, allowing the penis to get hard and function sexually.

How to use Sildenafil

Sildenafil should be taken about one hour before you plan to have sex. It can be taken before, during or after meals. A full stomach can, however, cause the medicine to take effect in a delayed way. Sildenafil Hennig should not be taken by men without erectile dysfunction and may interfere with certain medicines (see package leaflet). This medicine is not suitable for use in women.

Dosage

Sildenafil is available in various strengths. The doctor will recommend the right dose for you. Unless otherwise prescribes, the usual starting dose for men aged 18 and above is:

  • 50 mg once a day, approximately one hour before sexual activity.

Before you start using Sildenafil, be sure to read the package leaflet. It is important not to exceed the prescribed dose.

Side effects

Sildenafil may cause side effects, although not everyone gets them. The most commonly reported side effects include:

  • Headache;

  • Facial flushing;

  • Effects on vision (blurred vision, colour tinge to vision, light sensitivity);

  • Dizziness;

  • Nasal congestion.

If you have an erection for longer than four hours, contact the doctor immediately. See package leaflet for more side effects, warnings and contraindications.

Pregnancy/driving ability/alcohol

Sildenafil should not be used by women.

This medicine may cause dizziness and blurred vision. Please be aware of this and stay out of traffic if you experience these side effects.

Drinking alcohol can temporarily impair your ability to get an erection. To get the maximum benefit from your medicine, you are advised to limit or stop drinking alcohol before taking Sildenafil.
