Minocycline Minocin

Minocycline

What is Minocycline (Minocin)?

Minocin is an antibiotic for the treatment of bacterial infections. It is mainly used to combat acne, but it is also prescribed for respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections and ear, nose or eye infections. Its active ingredient is Minocycline and belongs to the tetracyclines antibiotics. It inhibits the growth and multiplication of bacteria.

How does Minocin work?

Minocycline (Minocin) ensures that the body produces less proteins. Without these proteins, bacteria can not survive or multiply. Furthermore the medication tackles the Propionibacterium that causes acne symptoms. This bacteria feeds on sebum that is produced by the sebaceous glands in the skin. The waste and fatty acids from these bacteria irritate the sebaceous glands, causing inflammation and red rashes. Minocin brings the inflammation under control, reduces acne and heals the skin.

Use

Always follow the prescribed instructions of the doctor when using Minocin 100 mg.The usual dose is 1 capsule a day. In severe infections you often start with two capsules on the first day, followed by 1 capsule per day. Swallow the medication as a whole, without chewing and with plenty of water. If you forget to take a dose, then you may not swallow the missed capsule. You take the next capsule at the next scheduled time.

Minocycline (Minocin) side effects

Just like all medications, Minocin may cause side effects. Possible side effects include light-headedness, dizziness and balance disorders. You should take this into account if you use dangerous (motorized) vehicles or tools. Stop operating the equipment if you experience these side effects. Other possible side effects include nausea, diarrhea and loss of appetite.

Combination with other medications

Inform your doctor if you are taking medications for other conditions. Minocin may possibly cause interactions with other medicines. Minocin is absorbed not as well by the body in combination with medications for heartburn. Minocin may cause breakthrough bleedings if you are taking the pill and can enhance the effect of anti-coagulants. Talk with the doctor whether you should use minocycline.

Note: Do not use Minocycline (Minocin) during pregnancy or when breastfeeding. The drug may be harmful to your child. People with impaired hepatic or renal function should use the medication with care after consultation with their doctor. Moreover, the drug is not suitable for children under 8 years.
