What is Metformin?
Metformin belongs to a group of medicines called biguanides, which are traditionally used in the treatment of type II diabetes. Metformin also has an unlicensed use in the treatment of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).
How does Metformin work?
Insulin is a hormone that is released from the pancreas after a meal and it enables your organs to take up energy in the form of glucose. In PCOS these cells are resistant to insulin and therefore the pancreas produces more to try and compensate for this. Metformin improves the sensitivity of your body to insulin, and therefore in PCOS could lead to improvement in symptoms such as frequency of menstruation and testosterone levels.
How to use Metformin for PCOS
Metformin tablets should be swallowed whole with a glass of water and taken with or after food, as this lowers the chance of getting an upset stomach. The usual adult dose in PCOS is: 1.5-1.7g daily in divided doses (after initially starting on 500mg for week one, and 500mg twice daily in week two).
Side-effects
Common side effects associated with Metformin are: nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach ache, loss of appetite and metallic taste in the mouth. For a full list of side-effects and for any further information, please see the product information leaflet.
Note
Please note, it is important to read and understand the signs of lactic acidosis, which can be found in the product information leaflet. It is also vital to maintain a healthy lifestyle with good diet and exercise, as weight loss may also improve insulin sensitivity.
