What is Famvir (Famciclovir)?
Famvir is an antiviral medicine that is used to treat viral infections such as shingles and genital herpes. Famvir works by blocking reproduction of the virus. It attacks the cause of the infection. The active ingredient in Famvir is famciclovir. Famvir is available in three strengths: 125 mg, 250 mg and 500 mg.
How to use Famvir
It is advisable to begin treatment when the first signs of infection appear. By doing so, reproduction is stopped in the initial phase. Your doctor will prescribe the right dose and treatment, depending on the infection you have and how severe it is.
Shingles:one tablet (500 mg), three times a day for seven days.
Genital herpes: one tablet (250 mg), three times a day for seven days.
The dosage also depends on the state of your immune system. Only your doctor may determine the right dosage for you. Be sure to finish the entire course of treatment to prevent the virus from coming back. Avoid all sexual contact while you are taking Famvir.
Side effects
Famvir (famciclovir) can cause side effects. The most common include gastrointestinal complaints such as nausea, diarrhea, stomach ache and vomiting. Other possible side effects are headache, fatigue and dizziness. The side effects are generally mild and will disappear over the course of time. See package leaflet for a complete list of side effects.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Do not use Famvir (famciclovir) if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Inform your doctor of any other medicines you are taking to avoid potential interaction between Famvir and other medication.
