Amlodipine Tablets
Amlodipine
What is amlodipine?
Amlodipine tablets are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension); and a certain type of chest pain called angina. Doctor Matt only prescribes amlodipine for high blood pressure (hypertension).
With high blood pressure, amlodipine works by relaxing blood vessels, so that blood passes through more easily.
In patients with angina, amlodipine works by improving blood supply to the
heart muscle which then receives more oxygen and as a result chest pain is prevented. Amlodipine
tablets do not immediately relieve chest pain caused by angina.
When amlodipine is not appropriate
If you have ever had an allergic reaction to amlodipine or any of its ingredients or to any other calcium antagonist.
Have very low blood pressure (hypotension) so that you feel faint or dizzy; have cardiogenic shock (a condition where your heart cannot pump enough blood for your needs);or have had heart failure due to a heart attack; or narrowing of the heart valve of the aorta (aortic stenosis)
You need to inform your doctor
Of any recent heart attack; heart failure, Severe increase in blood pressure (hypertensive crisis) or liver disease.
If you see a doctor or go into hospital for any reason, tell them that you are taking amlodipine
Please keep your doctor informed if you are taking any other medications including herbal remedies and non-prescription medicines
If you think you might be pregnant, or are planning to get pregnant, you must tell your doctor before you take amlodipine as its safety in pregnancy has not been established
How to take it
The recommended adult dose is 1 x tablet with a glass of water at the same time each day.
You can take the tablets either before or after meals. The usual does of 1 x 5mg per day should be adhered unless specified otherwise by your GP.
If you forget to take a tablet, take one as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time to take the next
one. Never take two doses together. Take the remaining doses at the correct time.
You should not drink grapefruit juice or eat grapefruit while taking this medicine. Grapefruit and
grapefruit juice can lead to an increase in the blood levels of amlodipine, which can cause an
unpredictable increase in its blood pressure lowering effect.
