Statins are the most commonly prescribed medication for treatment of high cholesterol, and work by blocking the enzyme responsible for the production of cholesterol in your liver.

The medicine

The following cholesterol lowering medications (statins) are available to you from Doctor Matt: Simvastatin and Atorvastatin Tablets.

How to take it

Take one tablet each daily. Simvastatin is taken at night.

Effectiveness

Statins both lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease in those at greatest risk.

Side-effects

Side-effects of statins can include cramps, muscle aches and weakness and rarely an inflammation of the liver. Doctor Matt will supply you with the same treatment that you already use at the moment and so you shouldn’t experience any new or different side effects.

Other things you should know

High cholesterol is a major risk factor in developing cardiovascular disease. Extra cholesterol can build up as plaques inside the walls of your blood vessels. These plaques can cause heart attacks, strokes or other serious damage to your heart. Simvastatin and Atorvastatin are effective at reducing cholesterol levels when combined with a low cholesterol diet.
